IDF Atuda Academic Officers Program

The IDF Academic Atuda Program is an official army track that allows approved candidates to postpone regular enlistment, complete academic studies first, and then serve in the IDF in professional roles connected to those studies. The best place to begin is the official IDF Academic Atuda Program page in English or the official Hebrew Atuda page.

 How the program works

In the Atuda framework, candidates study first and serve afterward.

Some examples are:

  • IDF’s Military Advocate General’s Corps page, which explains that many MAG officers enter the IDF through Atuda, complete legal studies, and then serve as legal officers in the corps
  • A dedicated nursing reserve track that appears in official Ministry of Health materials. The Misrad HaBriut’s - משרד הבריאות - Ministry of Health’s “Pisgah” Academic Reserve Studies (Atuda) page describes a framework that combines nursing studies, nurse qualification, and later service in the IDF Medical Corps.

Because service commitments can differ by track, field, and personal status, there is no single universal service length that should be assumed for every candidate. Atuda includes an extended service commitment, so candidates should confirm their expected obligation directly with Meitav or the relevant IDF office before making a final decision.

 How to Apply

Candidates who want to join Academic Atuda should begin by reviewing the official IDF How to Join page and by contacting Meitav (Hebrew), the IDF enlistment authority responsible for recruitment, screening, and placement.

In general, applicants must go through the IDF’s Atuda screening process and also apply separately to the academic institution where they wish to study. Acceptance by the academic institution does not in itself guarantee acceptance into Atuda, and acceptance into Atuda does not automatically guarantee admission to the academic institution.

Because procedures, dates, and required documents may change from year to year, candidates should confirm the current process directly with Meitav before applying.

 For Olim

Olim who are interested in Atuda should begin with Meitav, the IDF enlistment authority responsible for recruitment, screening, and placement. The official IDF “How to Join” page (both linked above) is also useful for candidates who are abroad or need guidance on how to begin the military process.

For direct questions, Olim can use the Meitav Olim inquiry form, write to meitav@idf.gov.il, or use the Olim coordinator email listed by the IDF, idfoleh@gmail.com. General IDF contact options also appear on the official IDF contact page.

Olim may also find it helpful to review the government’s Rights Guide for Immigrant and Returning Resident Soldiers, which explains broader rights and support frameworks for immigrant soldiers.

 Academic and Financial Support

For Olim who will study in Israel, it may also be worth checking eligibility for assistance through the Minhal HaStudentim - מינהל הסטודנטים - Israel Student Authority. The official government scholarship application page, the document submission page, and the main Israel Student Authority page also explain how to apply, how to upload documents, and where to find the main framework for support.

Students should note that they must be living and studying in Israel during the full study period in order to receive assistance.

 Fields of Study

Approved majors and professional fields are determined by the IDF and may change from year to year, so candidates should review the current official Academic Atuda Program page in English or the Hebrew Atuda page and confirm the latest options with Meitav before applying.

Examples of majors listed on the official Atuda pages include:

  • Aeronautics and space engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Civil, structural, and building engineering

Additional eligible majors, including various excellence tracks and specialized combinations, appear on the official Hebrew Academic Atuda website. Because this list may change from year to year, it is wise to recheck the official page shortly before publishing or applying.

 Important note

This guide is intended as a starting point only. Final eligibility, placement, service obligations, and available fields are determined by the IDF and may change over time, so candidates should always confirm current details directly through the official IDF pages and M
